The first Maia Music Festival, held at the Gaia Building in Delabole on Saturday 2nd February 2013, was a great success, providing an opportunity for local music and dance performers and workshop leaders to showcase their talents and share their skills to a wide ranging local audience in the heart of rural North Cornwall. The day also included a Craft Fair with a large number of stalls. Overall, we had nearly 500 people enjoying a thoroughly fun packed day.
The Lunchtime Session saw an eclectic line up, with examples of jazz, folk, funk, rock, reggae and blues. Performers included Just Jazz Guitars; Rob Barratt (comic poet and singer); The Pacific Island Ladies; Simon Swale and friends; DJ Jay Parsons; Christian Fitzpatrick (drum soloist) and many others who turned up with their instruments and joined in the fun. David Richey did a fantastic job compering for the day.
Workshops included musical theatre with Rachael Spencer of True Steps Dance who, along with Merrissa, also provided Popstarz disco; drumming with Jay Parsons of Universal Beat Music Project; didgeridoo with John Thorpe, and scratch and technical DJ skills with Nathan Galley and Mark Postins of Youthworks!.
Funky DJ Jay Parsons kicked off the evening entertainment, followed by John Thorpe performing an up-beat contemporary didj set. Two recently formed bands ‘Edge City Dub’ and ‘Dusk at Dawns’ then provided us with their own original and unique sounds. DJ’s Nathan Galley and Mark Postins of ‘Twisted Passion’ finished the evening with a unique ‘retro’ sound on the decks.
The Festival attracted a huge amount of support, with Alive Music Studios of Wadebridge providing all the sound equipment, free of charge, whilst all of the artists performed fee free. FEAST gave us a small grant to cover artists’ expenses. We had sponsorship from The Darlington Inn in Camelford, who provided the Bar. We also had a whole team of volunteers who helped set up and run the festival. Alice in Burgerland and Charlie’s Deli provided the catering. Many thanks to everyone who gave their time, talents and support to help make the event such a success. Our next event is on May 4th, contact Emma on 01840 212257 if you would like to get involved.
